Behind The Label

Founded in 1946 by Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin, and Joseph Cordeau in Westbrook, Maine, Sebago is the definitive architect of New England nautical style. Born from a desire to create high-quality footwear for the rugged Maine coastline, the brand’s first product—the hand-sewn Beefroll Penny Loafer—was modeled after the traditional Indian moccasin. This commitment to "genuine moccasin construction," where a single piece of leather wraps entirely around the foot, became the hallmark of Sebago’s comfort and durability.

The brand achieved global icon status in 1970 with the launch of the Docksides. Featuring a non-slip rubber sole, rawhide laces, and salt-resistant brass eyelets, the Docksides revolutionized the functional boat shoe, transitioning it from a technical sailing tool into a staple of the 1980s "Preppy" handbook. Sebago’s reputation for "Made in Maine" excellence was further cemented when they became the official supplier of the U.S. Sailing Team, proving that their hand-stitched silhouettes could withstand the most demanding maritime conditions.

Today, while Sebago has expanded into a global lifestyle label, it remains anchored in its "Crafted with Care" philosophy. By maintaining traditional hand-sewing techniques and utilizing premium leathers that develop a unique patina over time, the brand continues to bridge the gap between Ivy League sophistication and the raw, utilitarian spirit of the American North East.
