Around 1890, Levi’s® introduced a budget-friendly alternative to its iconic 501® jeans—the 201®, also known as “No. 2.” Designed as a more affordable option, the 201® retained key features of its premium counterpart but with cost-conscious modifications. Like the 501®, it was crafted from denim produced by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company in New Hampshire, though it lacked the renowned “XX” denim that defined the original blue jeans. Distinguishing itself further, the 201® featured a linen waistband label instead of leather and incorporated more economical buttons, making it a practical yet stylish choice for the era.
