Stylist Notes

The Race Jacket in Black Navy is a new design for SS21from Nigel Cabourn. Like other pieces in the range, some design traits are influenced by military design, except this style also merges details found on vintage motor-racing clothes. The silhouette originally comes from a hard-wearing paratrooper smock in Nigel’s archives which would have originally worn during WW2.

Created as part of the Lybro collection of workwear, the jacket is made from a mix of cotton herringbone and cotton canvas, and has been garment-dyed for a distressed, worn-in patina. If you’re looking for a unique version of the classic field jacket shape, then this might just be the one. This jacket pairs well with the cargo-style Race pants, creating a relaxed utility look.

In keeping with this season’s look at the style of mid-century Formula 1 drivers, the jacket features articulated sleeves. This is a detail often found on clothes designed with driving in mind, to help aid movement at the elbows whilst sat down. Like the original design it’s based on, it’s got four sizable front pockets—two angled chest pockets and two lower bellows pockets—along with a drawcord waist.
