Taion – The Japanese Down Experts

The word Taion translates directly into English from Japanese as the term ‘body temperature’ – a fitting name for a brand that are experts in the use of down in outerwear. Fairly new on the outerwear scene, the Tokyo based brand aims to set the standard within the outerwear industry providing functional yet outlandish colourful designs that are practical from the urban streets to the mountains.

Specialising in down-filled garments, Taions’ detail orientated approach to construction can be seen throughout their collections. The outers of their garments feature anti-corrosion protective coating which prevents natural down leakage, meaning if taken care of correctly the garments will last you a life time. High density nylon is also the material of choice for the outer shell, as it provides water and stain resistance whilst remaining light weight.

The iconic geometric square down design seen throughout Taions collections isn’t just for aesthetic reasons, but also to most efficiently compress and retain body temperature for excellent heat regulation. Due to their lightweight and slim silhouette, they are also highly packable. Each vest comes with its own ultralight stuff sack that makes them great to take your bag, ready to deploy at a moments notice when it gets chilly out.

Due to their lightweight and slim silhouette, they are also highly packable. Each vest comes with its own ultralight stuff sack that makes them great to take your bag, ready to deploy at a moments notice when it gets chilly out. This lightness is achieved by Taions special selection of materials. Many of the items feature a combination of mature waterfowl down and feathers (90% and 10%). Pair that along with the nylon water-repellent outer shell and their down pieces can weigh as little as 200 grams.

Versitility is also a key feature noted throughout the Japanese brand. Their reversible gilet selection features the same lightweight 800 FLP white duck down fill but also a deep-pile fleece interior too. In addition, the clever nylon construction means if necessary their down filled jackets can collapse and pack away tightly, either into a small rucksack or alternatively tie around your waist. This adaptability again reflects Taions aim to provide garments suitable for all environments, meaning you will never be caught short in changing weather climates.

The brand has recently collaborated with the American born outwear label – Gramicci. The collaborative collection between the Tokyo & California based brands feature a selection of down vests, jackets and accessories. The two joined forces to create a specially developed outer material-ripstop fabric-that is slightly rough, giving it a unique appearance and a slight stretch. The ripstop material is featured on all aspects of the collection in order to make the pieces as robust as possible. The collaborative collection is available online now here.
