Behind The Label

A label with a heritage that can be traced back to 1894 and the opening of J Barbour & Sons at 5 Market Place, South Shields Barbour has become a quintessential turn to down the years synonymous with the production of Waxed and Quilted Jackets.  First introducing it's mail order catalogue in 1908 - which saw demand from all over the world -  the brand was passed down throughout the generations to a point where in 1934, Duncan Barbour introduced a motorcycling range which quickly took and was adopted by almost every British International team between 1936 and 1977.

Developing the standard issue Ursula suit for members of the Submarine Service throughout WWII, the label moved to the Simonside Trading Estate on the outskirts of South Shields in 1957, building a manufacturing plant, giving it scope to make and produce it's own goods after years of being a retailer. Continuing to develop and innovate, 1980 was a big year for the label with the introduction of it's now iconic lightweight thornproof short riding jacket – the Bedale –and the first use of the distinctive black and gold Barbour International badge on the International Motorcycling Jacket - Paving the the Motorcycling inspired collection further down the line. A decade in which the label was adopted with segments of British Subculture Barbour has remained an ever present part of youth culture ever since - recently highlighted with it's adoption from the likes of the Arctic Monkeys and Rufus Wainwright throughout 2007's Glastonbury festival.

Now the holder of three royal warrants and countless design awards, 2018 saw the introduction of the Barbour Beacon line which adopted the brand's rich heritage updating clothing and outwear collections with a more youthful and trend led contemporary twist. Celebrating it's 125th anniversary in 2019 Barbour still manufacturers over 100,000 jackets a year in it's South Shields factory whilst five generations of the Barbour family has overseen innovation, progress and growth with authenticity and heritage, always ensuring that the brand remains true to its roots and founding principles of quality, durability, attention to detail and fitness for purpose.
