BARBOUR RE-WAX GUIDE
The Stuarts team recently got the opportunity to visit our good friends at Barbour over in their South Shields factory. On our visit we met up with re-waxing expert Neil to show us how best to re-wax your Barbour jacket yourself at home. Check out the full guide below.
Barbour Re-Wax Equipment List
• Barbour Wax • Pan/Bowl • Hot water • Sponge/Rag
Step 1 clean your jacket
Clean your jacket using cold water and a sponge to wipe down the outside of the jacket. Avoid using hot water or any kind of soap & never put the jacket in the washing machine or take to a dry cleaners, as this will remove the wax coating permanently and the jacket cannot be re-waxed.
step 2 soften the wax
Then grab a tin of Barbour Wax Thornproof Dressing and remove the lid. Place the tin in a container filled with hot water, ensuring the water is warm enough to gently soften the wax inside. Allow around 20 minutes for the wax to melt into a liquid form.
step 3 wax your jacket
Take an old cloth, rag, or sponge and apply the melted wax evenly onto the jacket, making sure to focus on the seams, creases, and any dry areas. Gently wipe away any excess wax as you go. To keep the wax at a workable consistency, leave the tin in the hot water while you apply it. If the wax starts to solidify, simply add more hot water to the container. Be careful to avoid getting wax on the corduroy collar, the interior lining of the jacket, or inside the pockets.
step 4 dry your jacket
After you've finished re-waxing the jacket, hang it up to dry. Let it sit in a warm area overnight, ensuring it’s kept separate from other clothing. Keep in mind that the jacket may release some excess wax for a short time, so avoid placing it near leather items or upholstered furniture during this period.
step 5 re-wax your jacket once a year
Barbour recommend you re-wax your jacket once a year (depending on how often you wear it) so that it will last for many adventures to come.
