Stylist Notes

Up to the 1950s, Levis jeans were primarily sold out West. But East Coasters were unfamiliar with our famous button fly 501® Originals. To make them more approachable, Levis introduced a new version: the 1954 501® Jean. Originally released as the "501® Z," its detailing reflects the brand's expansion into new territory. They took the original 501® Shrink-to-Fit™ Jean, replaced the classic button fly with a zipper, and named it the "501® Z." It retained all the other details loved by longtime wearers — the famed silhouette, rivets and tough-but-flexible denim. Retailers across the country began providing customers with both options: the 501® Jean and its zippered brother, the 501® Z. Today Levi's® Vintage Clothing has recreated the 1954 501® Jean, to help tell their story of the 501® and its evolution through the decades. Levis Vintage Clothing worked with a Japanese artisan mill in order to recreate all the nuances and idiosyncrasies of Levi’s® 1950s selvedge denim then finished it off with an authentic light stonewash.
