Universal Works

Universal Works began in Nottingham in 2009 when founder David Keyte set out from his kitchen table to make honest, well‑made clothing rooted in real life and authentic design. Inspired by his working‑class Midlands upbringing, where the practicality of classic workwear met the understated style of weekend dressing, the brand blends traditional British workwear and utility influences with a contemporary sensibility. Championing skilled, small‑scale production with trusted makers in the UK and abroad, Universal Works creates pieces that are functional, enduring, and quietly distinctive — from chore jackets and utility trousers to relaxed knits and overshirts. Over more than a decade, it has grown from a niche label to an internationally stocked independent, respected for its thoughtful silhouettes, heritage DNA, and timeless utility.

Behind The Label

Universal Works draws inspiration from founder David's upbringing in a provincial Midlands town during the 1970s. Coming from a working-class family that valued dressing well, David admired his father and uncles in their workwear and weekend attire. His career began as an apprentice sign-writer, coinciding with the emergence of sporting and music subcultures in the 1980s. Over the next thirty years, David honed his skills in the fashion industry, learning from and collaborating with industry luminaries like Paul Smith and Maharishi. This diverse journey informs Universal Works' commitment to blending heritage influences with contemporary style in their menswear collections.
