Rockport's legacy began in 1971 with a shared vision between father and son, Saul and Bruce Katz. What started as a small collection of shoes quickly evolved into a renowned brand - one that seamlessly blended the laid-back comfort of trainers with the polish of casual and dress footwear.

The early inspiration came from Boston's leather district, where moccasin-style shoes designed by Walter Dryer gained popularity. Locals affectionately referred to them as "Rockport type," a nickname that would eventually give the new company its name.

In 1973, Rockport released its first official model - the Country Walker. This shoe marked a turning point in the industry and earned Bruce Katz recognition as a pioneer of lightweight, comfort-driven footwear. It set a new standard for blending innovative design with everyday wearability.

A decade later, Bob Infantino, a seasoned retail shoe buyer, joined the Rockport team and quickly rose to Vice President of Product and Marketing. Under his guidance, the brand expanded and evolved, always pushing the boundaries of form and function.

Rockport's reputation for performance attracted elite sailors in the 1990s. By 1994, their nautically inspired designs were being worn in premier global competitions like the Whitbread Round the World Race, the Volvo Ocean Race, and the World Yacht Race.
