New Balance's "Protection Pack", also known as the Refined Future Pack, has become a fan favourite lineup & a staple in the Boston-based labels releases in recent times. Debuted on the 2002r back in 2020, the 1906 is the second silhouette to receive the distressed treatment. First introduced in 2009 as a nod to the 2000's running aesthetic, they reimagined the old-school style silhouette and added jagged cuts, distressed suede overlays and the deconstructed look that has become synonymous with todays Protection Pack.
One of NB's most popular models, the 1906 has gained popularity quite rapidly. It has been blessed over the past few months with a collaboration with Aim_ Leon Dore back in April, a proven recipe to sell out as seen with the 550 collaboration in 2020 which brought the basketball shoe back from the New Balance archives.
This latest blacked out variation of the 1906R Protection Pack by New Balance footwear designer Yue Wu, the brains behind the pack's original design, maintains the "wearable relic" appearance of its forerunners. Its black mesh base layer is embellished with overlays made of leather and suede, giving the design a tactile contrast. These overlays make reference to the "wearable relic" motif by having a pre-distressed, worn-in appearance.
The "NLOCK" lacing system, which is likewise black, incorporates the "N" emblem at the midfoot. The aesthetic is maintained with the toe and midfoot overlays, which go well with the all-black heel counter. White branding embellishments on the tongue and heel of the shoe, as well as 1906D logo on the heel, provide subtle accents. A black foam midsole with red NERGY branding and a black outsole complete the design.
Extra support is provided around the back by the delicately carved heel counter, and underfoot, NB's renowned Abzorb foam has been incorporated into the midsole for added comfort and cushioning. The "Triple White" colourway opts for an off-white, creamy sole to contrast with the "Triple Black's" very stealthy all-black unit, which adds to the collection's retro aura.
