Canadian denim experts Naked & Famous returns with their latest creation - the -Day Of The Dead' Dia De Los Muertos Selvedge. Few cultural celebrations embody the lively spirit of life and deep respect for ancestors as powerfully as Mexico's 'Day of the Dead.' Inspired by this vibrant tradition, the latest Dia De Los Muertos Selvedge brings the soul of the holiday to life, infusing its design with the heart and heritage of this beloved observance.
The Los Muertos selvedge story began with the careful selection of premium cotton sourced directly from Mexico, chosen not only for its superior quality but also for its deep ties to the cultural heritage it honors. This cotton was then spun and woven on vintage shuttle looms in Okayama, Japan, to create a 12.5oz selvedge denim. By incorporating rope-dyed short slub yarns, Naked & Famous crafted a fabric with a rich, textured surface and a dynamic colour gradient. As the indigo naturally fades over time, the thicker yarns reveal striking vertical fade patterns at a different pace than the finer threads, adding layers of contrast and depth. This aging process highlights the individuality of each piece, telling a unique story with every wear.
Inspired by the vibrant spirit of Mexico, the selvedge ID captures the bold colours of traditional Mexican sarape blankets. This distinctive detail goes beyond design, serving as a link between the wearer and Mexican culture - a seamless connection that blends tradition with contemporary style.
To truly embody the spirit of Dia De Los Muertos, Naked & Famous teamed up with Jos_ Ruiz, also known as Koopa, a renowned tattoo artist from Mexico City. His intricate artwork, featured on the vegetable-tanned leather patch and pocket flasher, powerfully conveys the symbolism of the Day of the Dead. Through his portrayal of skeletons at a traditional altar, Koopa honours the eternal connection between life and death. As the leather ages, it will develop a unique patina, further deepening the story of these jeans, much like the ever-evolving journey of life itself.
The Dia De Los Muertos Selvedge is carefully crafted with fine details, including contrast stitching that enhances its depth, along with silver metallic buttons and rivets that add a touch of refinement to the design.
