Born out of the vast landscapes of Vermont, USA, Merrell exists today to share the simple power of being outside. Merrell, A Brief History
Born in 1981, Merrell was founded when two executives for the Rossignol ski company, Clark Matis and John Schweizer, decided to launch a new brand of high performance hiking boots. The pair joined forces with Randy J Merrell, a manufacturer of custom boots ,and set about teaming up yo design their new line of Merrell boots. In 1983 the first Merrell boot launched and was named "the most comfortable and functional boots in North America" by Backpacker Magazine.
In 1986 Randy J Merrell sold his part of the company which bears his name to go back to his roots & previous career of making custom boots, the same year Merrell sold their 25,000th pair of shoes. Shortly after Merrells departure Merrell Footwear was purchased by Finnish sports brand Karhu. When Merrell was sold to Karhu John Schweizter moved with Merrell to become CEO of Merrell and Karhis Ski Divisions where he stayed until Merrell was sold to Wolverine in 1997 - who have retained ownership to this day.
Growth continued into the 90's with Merrell going international and establishing presence across the pond in regions such as Canada, the UK, Scandinavia and further around the US. With Clark heading up design the Jungle Moc was born, becoming a huge success as a casual mainstream shoe and sold its 10 millionth pair in 2009.
Today, as the global leader in outdoor active footwear with the Moab hiking boot and Jungle Moc, Merrell is focused on merging performance, styling, and comfort to empower all people to confidently explore the outdoors.
