Normally made from Calfskin or suede the Chukka Boot was first introduced by the British army in Africa during WWII. Its counterpart, the Desert Boot, was later introduced in 1949 by Clarks drawing inspiration from the “Crep Soled” rough suede boots made in Cairo's Khan el Khalili bazaar. Based upon the South African Veldskoen they typically have suede uppers consisting of a robust, yet simple, design both styles of boot have since become a turn to shoe for both adaptable style and comfort.
