Chaco – US Heritage Footwear
Founded in 1989 by a Colorado rafting guide, Mark Paigen. He had an idea to create the ultimate footwear for outdoor adventures in and out of water. The Gecko branding came from their ability to adapt and thrive in nearly any environment and so the name Chaco was formed.

Chaco is an American footwear brand best known for their iconic Z strap sandal, the one that started it all. Chaco provides a variety of outdoor influenced footwear. A Colorado Rafting Guide, Mark Paigen decided to create an outdoor sandal that allowed feet to easily dry in the sun while also providing support. Mark first began making these sandals in his spare room and eventually started to sell his products in a small shop in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.

Chaco have introduced ‘ReChaco’ located in Rockford, Michigan, where Chaco can repair their most iconic Sandal – The Z – to keep your adventures going. By repairing instead of rebuying, this is less polluting to the planet Earth. So far to date 266,172 pairs of Chaco sandals have been saved from landfill.
Chaco has also focused on the protection of rivers and riverside lands throughout the United States because rivers are the reason Chaco sandals are being made today. Chaco has donated $10,000 to river protection organisation American Rivers for its 5,000 Miles of Wild campaign, which aims to protect 5,000 new miles of rivers in the United States.
When there was the suggestion to shrink Utah’s Bears Ears National Monument, Chaco decided to fight against these changes by creating the limited version of the Z Sandal with 100% of the proceeds going to a pair of non-profit organisations to protect the monument.
