Still By Hands Lookbook Proves that Ametora is Here
Right now, the menswear scene in London is a diverse arena of awesomeness. Labels from all around the world have created new rotations on traditional menswear from Barena Venezia’s take on traditional tailoring with a Venetian spin to Wood Wood’s Scandinavian vision of how contemporary urban wear should be styled. Perhaps the one place in the world where these spins are happening right now is Japan whose up and coming designers have kept on trend this season with the continuation of what is known within the industry as Ametora, meaning American Traditional.
Stemming from the Japanese’s obsession for western styling in the 80’s, Ametora encompasses a mixture of American East Coast classic, elite clothing as well as traditionally British garments such as Fisherman Sweaters and Peacoats. One of the Japanese labels that shows the traditional traits of the movement in Japan is Still by Hand. Releasing its first collection at Stuarts London this season, the brand has added to the Ametora notion by giving a Japanese twist to menswear garments that we can closely relate to being British. This entails a range of Wool Blazers and Grandad shirts that have the added quality of being handmade, something of which the brand has a firm commitment towards.
Making a great addition to any wardrobe, for anyone interested in seeing the Japanese brand’s input on traditional menswear, take a look at the Still by Hand AW16 lookbook below. A movement which has already seen heritage brands such as Grenson collaborate with designers from Japanese streetwear brands such as Neighbourhood, expect the list of cutting edge designers coming out of Japan to grow over the coming seasons.
