Stuarts London – SS17 Menswear Fashion Forecast

Yes we know you’ve only just started planning your A/W wardrobe, but with all eyes on the major fashion weeks at the moment, it’s time to look into the future to see what we can expect for S/S 17 trends. Although you may not want to follow in the footsteps of the over the top collections displayed by the major fashion houses, we’ve stripped back the exaggerated shoulder pads and in your face European prints to find the real undercurrent of what we think you’re going to be wearing when 2017 rolls around.

In your face sportswear

Sports luxe still reigns supreme so you’re still safe to justify your Adidas and Nike payday binges as ‘fashion essentials’. For SS17 we’re to see more brands link sports clothing to their label, with retro styling and in your face logo placement expected to dominate the collections. Those old gym t-shirts may soon become your go-to casualwear,

Footwear is also predominantly sports led, with influencers across the globe opting for trainers rather than classic shoe styles – even with more formal outfits. This laid back approach to tailoring is just in time for a brand new wave of sneaker releases, including the highly anticipated Adidas-Y3 range for SS17. The inspiration for the collection if sci-fi, with brand new silhouettes representing some of Yohji Yamamoto’s favourite sci-fi films, including Blade Runner and A Clockwork Orange.

Military styling

Think clean, contemporary and practical. The ‘utility’ trend is one that’s set to take over in SS17, with designers shifting to a more uniform like aesthetic. Minimal, clean cut shirts and trousers in neutral shades of beige, green and browns will be the ideal choice for casual evenings out. Military styling isn’t a new concept, it’s always influenced elements of our casual attire from those essential bombers jackets to functional work boots. We think 2017 is going to shake up this trend by taking it back to basics, using block colours for layering up and leaning more towards functionality than fashion.

SS17 Colour Trends

Each season colour experts try to decipher which shades are going to be dominating the catwalks and the high street. For SS17 we’re seeing a revival of retro colours, with burnt reds, fresh spring greens and deep browns taking centre stage.

Ankle Baring

You either love it or hate it, but shorter hems have cemented their place in the SS17 trend list. Whether you opt to roll up or go for a purposefully shorter length, the menswear catwalks have ensured we keep away from the sock drawer – for another season at least. We’re also seeing a lot more relaxed fit trousers to accompany the trend, with lightweight chinos and linen based trousers taking centre stage. Great news for those dreading having to strategically place themselves into a pair of skinny jeans this summer! It’s time to give the ‘boys’ some room.

It’s in the detail

If you’re not feeling the stripped back utilitarian trend, fear not – there’s still plenty of colour to go around. SS17 is set to be the year of detail, with everything from statement bombers to denim pieces decorating with embroidered designs. Your first thought may well be to leave the embroidery to your grandma, but with bit names like Louis Vuitton and Gucci opting for detailing on their designs, it’s set to be a bit hit. From simple designs added to denim jackets to a refresh of the plain bomber jacket, you can take this trend as far as you like. If you’re planning on diving into this trend, ensure that the rest of your outfit is paired down, make a statement with the detailing to make sure it stands out.
