Levi’s Made & Crafted

Levi’s Made & Crafted

The design ethos for Levi’s Made & Crafted is rooted in iconic American clothing, just like Levi’s Vintage Clothing. The inspiration is in American work wear, sportswear, military uniforms then mixing traditional fabrics and construction with high technology and contemporary fits. Old and new, craft and science. As Levi’s Vintage Clothing looks to the past, to recreate iconic garments from Levi’s history, Levi’s Made & Crafted comes from the same origins but projects forwards. It’s a modern collection with traditional sensibilities.

Launched in 2009, Levi’s Made & Crafted is a premium line from the iconic denim manufacturer. Taking inspiration from the Levi’s workwear heritage, the design team update it with inspired contemporary cuts, refined details and high-quality materials. A  collection that is a modern expression of the Levi’s Brand heritage, inspired by products from the late 60’s Levi’s® catalogues and the clean, colourful, preppy and cool look of that time. Best embodied by Steve McQueen & Jacqueline Bisset in their 1968 film Bullitt, this aesthetic is overlaid into Levi’s® Made & Crafted™’s usual blend of beautifully made, tailored workwear with crafted details.

Levi’s Made & Crafted, the design focused collection from the Levi’s XX division, brings some nicely detailed pieces for Autumn 2011. Manufacture, not surprisingly, is placed at a premium, and the goods are crafted in some of the finest factories in the world. The shirting, leather motorcycle jackets, bags, and accessories are all made in Italy; and, new for Made & Crafted is special men’s capsule line of Cone selvage denim that is made in California. Texture plays a large part in the collection, and the mixing of different fibres, such as silk and linen, Wool, or the use of irregular yarns, offers a variety of tactile delights. All fabrics are Made and Crafted for each garment exclusively for this premium Levi’s Collection.

The line focuses on premium materials and details fusing a modern sensibility with the brand’s rich historical heritage. For Fall/Winter 12 however, the line really took on a new, playful attitude with its colourful palette, quirky details and statement prints. LVC designer, Miles Johnson was made design director for this season and his eye for quirky and fun detailing shines through.

Miles played with the concept of the blanket lined trucker, exploring modern double-faced, denim-look woollens and a re-coloured blanket stripe allover print trucker vest. Hardware has been enamelled in glossy brights and even space dyed rainbow top-stitching and multicoloured neps bring subtle colour to classic denim.

They have also completed a fantastic lookbook to present this collection. Shot at the seaside, the vibrancy of the collection shines through with an unexpected pops of nordic blues and yellows, while the mix of blanket scarves, heavy knits and sherpa lined jackets give the shoot a warm and cozy feel.
