VICTORINOX FALL/WINTER 2012: PROTECT

Following the successful Remade in Switzerland: Christopher Raeburn for Victorinox capsule collection last fall, the makers of the Original Swiss Army Knife have asked the UK designer (who was recently named the winner of the British Fashion Awards for Emerging Talent Menswear) to continue consulting with the brand’s internal design team on the main collection as well as to conceive fresh capsule collections. The first project to emerge is PROTECT, which was introduced at Pitti Uomo in Florence in January 2012 for the Fall/Winter 2012 season.

Raeburn chose the name PROTECT because it refers to the role of clothing to protect our bodies from the elements as well as our responsibility to protect the environment. ‘I was inspired by the Original Swiss Army Knife’, he continues. ‘During the manufacture, steel leftover from the cutting is melted down to make book marks with the brand’s cross and shield logo. Nothing wasted, nothing more’.

PROTECT includes six multi-functional pieces that evolved from a 1970s vintage Swiss Army field jacket Raeburn discovered. The fabrics are a unique mix of technical fabrics and recycled fibers, including Repeloff cotton nylon, wax cotton nylon twill and matte recycled polyester all available in either black or olive. Eco Primaloft is used extensively for insulation in both 40g and 100g weights. The camouflage print on that field jacket gave the designer the idea to develop an abstract camo print based on the cross and shield logo, which is printed on the nylon linings of several items in the PROTECT capsule.

The Insulated Parka Bag in cotton nylon serves double duty, making the switch from oversized outerwear to convenient backpack bag in six simple steps that are printed on the inside pocket. Also available is a Printed Insulted Parka Bag in water repellent soft touch polyester.

The Packable Vest requires eight steps to be packed into its left-hand pocket and sports unusual details like transferable front to back body pockets.

With six steps to pack into its left-hand pocket, the Packable Raincoat features a stowaway hood and Inova flashlight and key latch at interior security pocket as well as red cotton binding inside.

The Insulated Reversible Liner is crafted matte recycled polyester and is quilted on one side with the signature cross and shield pattern and printed on the other side with the abstract shield camo motif in nylon. Loops at cuffs and center back allow this liner to button into the PROTECT Insulated Parka Bag and Packable Raincoat.

Rounding out the PROTECT capsule collection is the Water Repellent Blazer. The blazer has a stowaway hood, storm cuffs at wrist, the same red cotton binding inside as the raincoat and shield logo reinforced elbow patches.
