Carhartt is no less surprisingly a brand that you will come across at some stage. But its name is steeped in a vast American history, and easily Carhartt grew to one of the leading brands within the European Street wear scene.
Carhartt was born in Detroit in 1889 and started life as a work wear label, the last 119 years have seen it grow to dominate American work wear. Following the assimilation of blue collar work wear by American youth in the late eighties Work In Progress started to import Union-made Carhartt product into Europe and Carhartt Street wear was born. With some great advice from his first potential buyer, he realised that his products had to be different. He created an overall garment made specifically for the railroad worker which had never been made before. He started with only 4 sewing machines and about 5 employers, the first products were overalls in duck and denim fabrics, and by travelling from town to town, and visiting each railroad division, he was able to establish himself in the overall business.

The Great Depression had a devastating effect on Carhartt and after a major blow to having only 3 plants in the US, he and his son set about to establish the “Back to the Land” campaign Carhartt grew through the early 1900’s and their motto “From mill to millions” was reflected in their operations which included cotton productions, denim mills and apparel manufacturing facilities. The Carhartt Master Cloth was designed and woven especially by their mills in Carhartt garments and was pledged to be the best cloth that could be produced.

Now with 50 stand-alone stores from London to Tokyo, Carhartt prides itself in making clothing which reflects the original company ethos along with supporting the most progressive parts of street culture.

With Standing for rugged construction, innovative design and exceptional standards of quality, durability and comfort, Carhartt work wear has become a legend in the skilled trades. Easily Carhartt grew to one of the leading brands within the European Street wear scene. Starting to distribute the regular collection from Carhartt, Work In Progress processed quickly to adapt Carhartt to the European market. In 1997 the first selection of pieces made especially for the European market were added to the regular collection.
